After a 2020 campaign that saw the Sun Devils go 2-2 in a COVID-shortened season, it’s expected that Herm Edwards’ squad will take a huge leap forward this fall. ASU was ranked 25th in the Associated Press’ (AP) preseason poll, which was released on Monday. They are one of five teams from the Pac-12 to be ranked, joining Oregon (11), USC (15), Washington (20) and Utah (24). Arizona State was ranked 19th in the USA Today Coaches Poll, which was released last week. The Sun Devils’ season opener is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m. against Southern Utah. Arizona State’s highest-ranked opponent is Oregon, who they are not scheduled to play this season. The Ducks will visit the Valley and play at Sun Devil Stadium in 2022. (AP) — Auburn fired football coach Bryan Harsin on Monday after less than two seasons, ending a rocky tenure in which the proud program struggled to compete in the Southeastern Conference. Harsin was hired away from Boise State in December 2020 but finishes his stint at Auburn with a 9-12 record overall and 3-5 mark in the SEC. The end for Harsin comes just two days after the Tigers lost their fourth straight game, a 41-27 decision to Arkansas at home, and with Auburn about to embark on a stretch of games against Western Division rivals Texas A&M and Alabama. Auburn will owe Harsin 70% of his remaining contract — more than $15 million — and half of that must be paid within 30 days. “Auburn will begin an immediate search for a coach that can return the Auburn program to a place where it is consistently competing at the highest levels and representing the winning tradition that is Auburn football,” the school said in a brief statement announcing the move. The school didn’t name an interim coach, but Auburn plays at Mississippi State on Saturday. Harsin’s tenure began to unravel before it even began, and the Tigers are 3-10 against Power Five opponents under him. They have been outscored by their SEC opponents 119-31 in the second half of their last four games, losing each after holding halftime leads in three of them. Auburn had to fend off late poaching attempts from Arkansas and Mississippi State to land Harsin to replace Gus Malzahn. It was a costly decision for the Tigers, whose first choice, defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, had been the presumed successor after serving as interim coach and had the support of some influential boosters. Malzahn was fired after eight seasons and paid a $21.5 million buyout. Now, the Tigers will be making their third head coaching hire in the past four years. Auburn had never fired a coach after less than four seasons, much less during season two. Harsin’s brief tenure wasn’t helped by a tumultuous offseason that began with an exodus of players and assistant coaches and included a university investigation into his handling of the program after a rocky 2021 debut. The Tigers had to replace both coordinators and lost their most experienced quarterback, Bo Nix, to the transfer portal. The school said it had hired an outside law firm to investigate the program after the wave of departures. Harsin was back home in Boise, Idaho, at the time. He told ESPN then that he was “not planning on going anywhere” and was “not going to allow all this to mess with that.” The school gave him a very tepid vote of confidence, saying Harsin would return for a second season but needed to improve. That didn’t happen amid a tough schedule and a revolving door at quarterback. Harsin was a successful head coach at Arkansas State and Boise State before Auburn hired him. He replaced Malzahn, his predecessor at Arkansas State, in 2014 and went 69-19 in seven seasons at Boise State, including 3-2 in bowl games. But the SEC West was a much tougher neighborhood. The Tigers started 6-2 in Harsin’s first season before losing their last five games, including a 17-13 defeat to No. 3 Alabama in four overtimes. Auburn started 5-3 this season and is coming off a 41-27 loss to Arkansas. On Monday, Auburn also announced it had hired Mississippi State athletic director John Cohen as its new AD. Cohen was athletic director at Mississippi State, his alma mater, for the past seven years after serving as the school’s baseball coach and leading the Bulldogs to a College World Series appearance. He replaces Allen Greene, who announced on Aug. 26 that he was stepping down with five months left in his original contract. NCAA Re-Rank 1-131: Tennessee moves into top four after Alabama win Tennessee is the new home of the sport’s best win and one of the biggest moments of the college football season. After beating Alabama 52-49 on a last-second field goal, the Volunteers have also moved into the top four of the USA TODAY Sports NCAA Re-Rank 1-131. Tennessee is up three to No. 3 after pulling off the upset, putting Josh Heupel’s team behind No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Ohio State but ahead of No. 4 Michigan. The loss drops the Crimson Tide from No. 1 to No. 5. Alabama is one of the few teams in the Bowl Subdivision able to lose a game in the middle of October and still remain in the thick of the College Football Playoff race, though the margin for error is gone: Alabama will have to win out to finish in the top four, including a victory over the Bulldogs if the two teams meet in the SEC championship game. There are no changes in the teams holding the remaining spots in the top 10. No. 6 Clemson is followed by No. 7 Mississippi, No. 8 Texas Christian, No. 9 Oregon and No. 10 Oklahoma State. In all, the SEC lands six teams in the top 25, followed by the Big 12, Pac-12 and ACC with five, the Big Ten with four, the American with two and the Sun Belt, Conference USA and independent BYU with one. The Big Ten’s four teams rank among the top 14 in the re-rank. The five highest-ranked teams from outside the Power Five are No. 14 Cincinnati, No. 18 Liberty, No. 20 Tulane, No. 25 James Madison and No. 26 North Carolina State. The Green Wave move up 17 spots after beating South Florida to reach 6-1. Making their debut in the Top 25, the Dukes fall five spots after losing for the first time this season, 45-38 to Georgia Southern. Clemson, Michigan and Alabama head list of teams in College Football Playoff contention Published 4 months ago on October 5, 2022 While the names appear to be the same, the College Football Playoff race has been turned upside down compared to the start of the regular season. Alabama remains the favorite to reach the semifinals, followed by Ohio State and Georgia. But the Bulldogs have overtaken the Buckeyes for the second spot behind the Crimson Tide and ahead of No. 4 Clemson. The Tigers have climbed past Southern California and Oklahoma after beginning the year at No. 4 in the USA TODAY Sports 1-131 rankings. The Sooners have dropped out of consideration entirely after losing in consecutive weeks to Kansas State and TCU. With No. 18 Kansas set to visit No. 19 TCU on Saturday, the Big 12 has a chance to make a big move in the playoff race. Oklahoma State is at No. 5. The shakeup in the top 10 has opened the door for two teams that rank among the biggest surprises in the FBS: No. 6 Mississippi and No. 8 UCLA. The Rebels are 5-0 and are coming off a win against previously unbeaten Kentucky, which drops to No. 17. The Bruins have won their first five games for the first time since 2013 after beating then-No. 15 Washington, which slips to No. 23. Tennessee is No. 7 after a week off. The Volunteers will host No. 29 LSU this weekend before Alabama comes to town on Oct. 15. Penn State is No. 9 and travels to the Big House to face Michigan next weekend. Rounding out the top 10 is Southern California, which is 5-0 under first-year coach Lincoln Riley. The Trojans will play three strong Pac-12 opponents in a row, starting with No. 21 Utah, before facing No. 16 UCLA in the regular-season finale. Alabama narrowly overcomes Texas A&M in final seconds Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Will Reichard made a 33-yard field goal with 10 seconds to play and No. 1 Alabama survived a back-and-forth SEC battle against Texas A&M 24-20 despite playing without Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young. Reichard missed a 47-yarder with 3:32 left, giving the Aggies one more shot. Texas A&M drove to the Alabama 2-yard line on a pass interference call against Terrion Arnold on fourth down, but the Tide (6-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) held on. Haynes King threw an incomplete pass on the final play while pressured by Alabama’s Will Anderson Jr. With the sophomore Young watching from the sideline in a sling, Jalen Milroe and Jahmyr Gibbs helped carry the Tide after Texas A&M (3-3, 1-2) mostly contained the Tide’s big-play passing game. The Aggies, who handed Alabama its only regular-season loss last season, were 24-point underdogs, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Cameron Latu had gone for 11 yards on a third-and-15 play with 3:38 left to set up Reichard’s field goal attempt. He had missed his last two kicks after making his first 10 attempts. The Aggies had one more chance after the miss and took over at their 29 with 1:50 left and no timeouts. King converted a fourth-and-2 play with a completion to his own 49. A pass interference call against Arnold in the end zone gave the Aggies one more play from the 2. But King’s pass to the sideline was too high for Evan Stewart. The Tide won their 16th straight home game and 14th in a row in the series, dating back to Johnny Manziel’s 2012 season. Milroe passed for three touchdowns and ran for 83 yards but also lost two fumbles and was intercepted once. Gibbs ran for a career-high 154 yards on 21 carries, including 70- and 37-yard bursts in the second half. King passed for 253 yards and two touchdowns but was also picked off once. He started in place of injured Max Johnson after starting the first two games, including a 17-14 loss to Appalachian State. Alabama’s defense came up with three interceptions and a stop on fourth-and-3 in the final quarter. THE TAKEAWAY Texas A&M: Found a spark offensively but couldn’t finish off the big upset after driving to the 2-yard line. King was mostly ineffective after his early success in relief of Johnson in a 42-
